Learning About Your Hearing

Sometimes just knowing how your hearing loss affects you is enough to let you compensate for it.  For example, you might have a mild hearing loss in one ear that affects your ability to sense the direction of a sound source and just being aware of this fact can help.  As another example, you might be more inclined to effectively hear lower rather than higher pitches, or men more than women.  Simply knowing these things can reduce confusion and frustration, which is more reason to get your hearing test today.

Hearing Aids

Our audiologists are specially trained to analyze your hearing and recommend the hearing aid that best matches your hearing profile.  We work very closely with all of the hearing aid manufacturers to ensure your hearing aid is exactly what you need.  Our audiologists are on the front line of providing regular feedback to the manufacturers, helping to constantly improve and refine hearing aid technology.

Hearing Help Classes

Among the range of techniques available to those with hearing loss are methods such as speechreading, shaping your sound environment, reducing ambient noise and simple things like improving lighting conditions.  

Other techniques you can use are to have people face you when they speak, clearly enunciate their words, or you can use various strategies to resolve different communication problems, such as when you're doing your banking or ordering something over the phone.

The Canadian Hearing Society is at the forefront of the push to use technology to solve issues arising from hearing loss.  Our Communication Devices Program provides many useful and functional solutions such as amplified phones, television listening systems, visual fire alarms, vibrating alarm clocks, FM communication systems, TTYs  and more.
