Position: EMPLOYMENT CONSULTANT
Location: Kingston
Start Date: July 2, 2010
Minimum Start Salary: $10,188 per annum ($45,284, pro-rated to 30% for 9 months)
Position Status: 9-Month Contract – July 2, 2010 to March 31, 2011
Part-time; 10.5 hours per week

POSITION SUMMARY:

To assess clients and provide a continuum of employment services to prepare deaf, deafened or hard of hearing consumers for training and employment.  Initiate job development, job trials and placements.  Provide information to employers and related consumer groups about deafness and hearing loss.  Present workshops and seminars focused on accessibility issues related to employment.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct Service:

•    Develop job leads for culturally Deaf, oral deaf, deafened and hard of hearing job seekers
•    Provide employment planning assistance
•    Provide job readiness preparation, e.g. assistance in developing realistic career goals, resume preparation, interviewing skills, accommodation requirements, and interpersonal skills; and increase computer literacy
•    Provide intervention in employment situations in relation to employee/employer inquiries and provide appropriate information and client referrals 
•    Respond to job orders from employers and initiate cold calls daily to employers to facilitate job leads for consumers
•    Attend case conferences in relation to client requirements
•    Visit employer workplaces, provide information and assessments related to accessibility issues
•    Increase consumer literacy in areas such as filling out job application forms, reading job postings, understanding interview questions and written aptitude tests
•    Provide necessary education, technical devices and access to communication to ensure an accessible workplace and co-ordinator instruction in sign language
•    Initiate, facilitate, and maintain support groups, job search clubs, and other groups as required
•    Work with client to promote independence and advocacy

Community Education:

•    Initiate, prepare, and participate in workshops for employers and the community on deaf and hard of hearing issues

Administration:

•    Update and maintain confidential client files
•    Keep accurate records, statistics, and provide reports as required by ODSP, CHS, and other funding source guidelines

Professional Development:

•    Attend all department and agency staff meetings
•    Keep up to date with relevant legislation and trends
•    Acquire and maintain ASL proficiency to the level required for the position

LINE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

•    Reports to Regional Director, Kingston

QUALIFICATIONS:

•    Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Business, or Career Counselling or equivalent
•    3-5 years employment consulting experience
•    Experience in job development, job trials and job placement
•    Excellent problem-solving skills
•    Knowledge of MTCU policies & ODSP program
•    Valid driver's licence and access to a vehicle
•    Must be willing to work evenings and weekends as required
•    Regular local travel; occasional out of town travel e.g. ASL classes, professional development, etc.
•    Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
•    Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and internet
•    Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) or willingness to learn
•    Demonstrated sensitivity to working in a culturally diverse environment
