What's an assessment?

Q: What's an assessment?  What's involved and what can I expect?

A: An assessment is where we meet with you to talk and give you some basic tests with the goal of identifying your needs.  After the tests we discuss your results, develop goals and work out a treatment plan for you.   You do not need to prepare for this assessment, just come as you are and enjoy yourself.

What's an intake appointment?

Q: What's an intake appointment?  What's involved?

A: An intake appointment is your first meeting with us to discuss what you want or need.   It is also when we ask questions about you, such as your medical history, education and employment.  This information will help us determine what services are best for you and also helps us plan for your first assessment.

What do I need to do to start?

Q: What do I need to do to apply for speech-language sessions?

A: The first step is the easiest; simply contact us!  We will then set you up with two initial appointments: one to discuss what you need, the other to assess your skills and capabilities.  After that we can give you an idea of what kind of sessions would be best for you and what's involved.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

Q: Do I need a referral in order to make an appointment with a speech-language pathologist?

A: No, at CHS you do not need to have a doctor referral for a speech-language session. 

What does the program offer for adults?

Q: What does the speech-language pathology program offer for adults?

A: For adults we offer English For New Canadians for people with a hearing loss whose first language is not English or ASL.  The focus is on using role playing to teach spoken English, English grammar and vocabulary with the goal of learning to converse in everyday situations.  This program is popular among professionals who don't natively speak English, yet need to learn it for work.
